Detects successful logon with logon type 9 (NewCredentials) which matches the Overpass the Hash behavior of e.g Mimikatz's sekurlsa::pth module. Mimikatz is a open source malware program that is commonly used by hackers and security professionals to extract sensitive information, such as passwords and credentials, from a system's memory. In an overpass-the-hash attack, an adversary leverages the NTLM hash of a user account to obtain a Kerberos ticket that can be used to access network resources. Defense Evasion
Defense Evasion consists of techniques that adversaries use to avoid detection throughout their compromise. Techniques used for defense evasion include uninstalling/disabling security software or obfuscating/encrypting data and scripts. Adversaries also leverage and abuse trusted processes to hide and masquerade their malware. Use Alternate Authentication Material: Pass the Hash
Adversaries may "Pass the hash" using stolen password hashes to move laterally within an environment, bypassing normal system access controls. Pass the hash (PtH) is a method of authenticating as a user without having access to the user's cleartext password. Valid password hashes for an account are captured using a Credential Access technique and can be used with PtH to authenticate as that user. Once authenticated, PtH may be used to perform actions on local or remote systems.

Correlation
Mimikatz is intended to be used by penetration testers and security red teams to simulate a real cyberthreat. Investigate whether the user needs to really run Mimikatz. Investigate what other incidents are occurring on that host during that time frame. If necessary, rebuild the host from a known, good source and have the user change their password.
